Birdwatching is good for the brain. In Crete, that’s where the oasis is.

Science now confirms this. But those who live near the Almyros already knew it—even without realizing it.

There is an oasis just a few meters from the road. A system of karst springs feeds a coastal stream, surrounded by dense stands of Phragmites australis, tamarisk, and eucalyptus trees. It’s called Almyros; it lies just outside Agios Nikolaos, in the Gulf of Mirabello, and flows directly into the sea. It’s one of those places that many residents pass by every day without really noticing it.

I live right across from it. And ever since I started bringing my binoculars there, I’ve realized that “looking” is never a neutral act.

A study published a few weeks ago in the *Journal of Neuroscience* demonstrated something that, until now, many would have dismissed as mere wishful thinking: carefully observing birds—with that subtle focus known as birdwatching— physically alters the structure of the brain. Not as a metaphor. As a measurable fact, confirmed by MRI.

It’s worth taking the time to fully understand what the data is telling us.


What neurologists found

Erik Wing, a researcher at the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto and lead author of the study (Wing et al., 2026), compared the brains of 29 experienced birdwatchers with those of 29 beginners, matched for sex, age, and education. The participants ranged in age from 22 to 79.

The result: experienced birdwatchers showed higher structural density in brain areas associated with attention and perception, and this physical reorganization was directly linked to their accuracy in identifying species. T A denser, more efficient neural network. More compact and faster neural connections.

In practical terms: the experts correctly identified 83% of the local species and 61% of those they had never seen before. Beginners managed only 44% in both cases.

But the most significant finding is another: these structural benefits persisted even into old age, suggesting that skilled engagement in a complex hobby can provide a protective cognitive reserve as people age.

Cognitive reserve is the brain’s ability to resist decline, compensate for damage, and maintain intact functions even as we age. It is the same process by which professional musicians exhibit structural changes in auditory areas, and athletes exhibit similar adaptations in motor areas.

Birdwatching works because it combines detailed identification, visual search, attention to the immediate environment, sensitivity to movement, pattern recognition, and the construction of elaborate conceptual networks across different species. It is a set of simultaneous mental processes, and this complexity is precisely what brings about the most profound changes.

Wing puts it bluntly: birdwatching involves many different cognitive domains, which makes it potentially beneficial for many different types of cognition.


It’s not the birds. It’s the quality of attention.

There is one detail that struck me more than any other as I read the original study.

Wing adds a crucial clarification: there is nothing intrinsic to the appearance of the observed species. What matters is the complexity and combination of mental demands that the activity requires.

Birdwatching works not because the species observed are magical (although, when you look at them, that’s sometimes the impression you get), but because it forces you to do everything at once: scan the environment, compare what you see with mental images stored in your memory, make a decision in a matter of seconds, and hold multiple pieces of information in your memory simultaneously.

It’s a cognitive workout disguised as a walk.

And there’s more. A study published in *Scientific Reports*, which followed 1,292 people for three years, showed that daily encounters with birds (seeing or simply hearing the species around us) were associated with lasting improvements in mental well-being, evident even in people diagnosed with depression (Hammoud et al., 2022).

You don’t have to become an expert. You just have to start looking.


Crete is an extraordinary place to do that

Crete isn’t just beautiful. From an ornithological standpoint, it is one of the most exceptional places in Europe.

Crete is located at the crossroads of three continents (Europe, Asia, and Africa) and hosts thousands of migratory species in its wetlands every year. It is one of the main flyways for birds that winter in East Africa and breed in Eastern and Northern Europe. The migration takes place every spring, traveling up the Nile Valley and across the eastern Mediterranean, often in large numbers, between mid-March and mid-May.

More than 412 species, most of them migratory, have been identified on the island. And in Mirabello alone, in the province of Agios Nikolaos, there is a concentration of radically different ecosystems: the Almyros wetland, the Elounda salt flats, the Bramiana Reserve, and the Selinari Gorges. Within just a few square kilometers, you can observe a diversity that elsewhere would require weeks of travel to see.

The Eleonora’s Falcon (Falco eleonorae) is one of Greece’s most important birds of prey, with a wingspan of up to 103 cm. It nests on the rocky islets around Crete, including the Dionysades, and winters in East Africa and Madagascar. The fact that over 85% of the global population of this species breeds on the Greek islands never ceases to amaze me.


Two Danes at Dawn, and What They Taught Me

When I arrived here, I saw them almost immediately. A couple, in the pool area of the hotel next door—every morning at dawn, armed with binoculars and cameras. They would set off toward the river’s mouth with the quiet determination of those who know where they’re going and why. I took them for birdwatchers. I thought: professionals, perhaps researchers.

It took almost a year and a half before we really got to know each other. Michael and Majbritt, Danes, have always been nature lovers—he ever since childhood. They don’t have any specific academic degrees in this field, but they possess something even rarer: they know how to observe.

When we finally sat down to talk, they taught me things that no book had ever taught me. How to listen before searching. Where to position myself in relation to the light. Which species to expect in which season, and in which part of the reed bed. How to distinguish one call from another, and understand what’s happening in the wetland based on how something moves on the water’s surface.

It was through them that I began to see this place in a different light.


Almyros in Agios Nikolaos: the place right across from my house

The Almyros in Agios Nikolaos is unlike any other wetland in Crete. It is not a lake, nor is it a nature reserve with developed facilities. It is a system of karst springs, Πηγές Αλμυρού, as the sign on site reads, which feeds a coastal watercourse with clear, slightly brackish water, surrounded by dense stands of Phragmites australis, tamarisk, and eucalyptus, flowing all the way to the sea.

The Almyros River is home to many species—primarily birds—that find food, shelter, and ideal conditions for breeding there. Ducks, herons, and gulls are present year-round. The area also serves as a stopover and refueling point for migratory species during their spring and fall migrations. The mouth of the Almyros River, in Agios Nikolaos, is among the most important bird sites in all of eastern Crete.

When I stand there with my binoculars early in the morning, I can usually spot gray herons, little egrets, kingfishers, and mallards within a few minutes. In the spring, the species change almost every day. There’s something truly amazing about realizing just how many lives are unfolding a few meters away, in silence, in the middle of an ordinary day.


Birdwatching as a Practice of Mindfulness

There is one aspect that neuroscientific research describes with precision and that those who practice meditation will recognize immediately.

Birdwatching is not a passive, boring activity. It is an engaging pursuit that captures the mind and induces a state of deep psychological absorption—what psychology calls “flow”—characterized by intense concentration, a fluid sense of engagement, and a feeling of mastery.

Bringing attention and awareness to one’s experience during birdwatching can help one use attention more effectively and mindfully in other areas of life as well (Peterson et al., 2024). Birdwatching requires total presence in the moment: you cannot be elsewhere in your mind and at the same time hear a call, pinpoint the sound, or spot the silhouette among the branches.

It is an active meditation, embodied in the landscape.

You don’t need to be an expert. All it takes is to keep your eyes open, a little silence, and a willingness to pause.

Michael and Majbritt never called themselves experts. Yet they are. And every morning at dawn, they were there; the world around them was full of things that others couldn’t see.

If you’re in Agios Nikolaos, start at Almyros. It’s just a short walk away, it’s accessible, and it doesn’t require any special equipment. You can start with your smartphone: the Merlin Bird ID app from the Cornell Lab is free, works offline, recognizes bird songs in real time, and has a comprehensive database for Greece.

If you want to explore further: the salt flats of Elounda are perfect in the spring. And for those who really want to immerse themselves in nature, the migration season—from mid-March to mid-May—is when Crete becomes a crossroads for wildlife.

You don’t have to know everything already. The point is to start observing with a different kind of attention.

The brain will take care of the rest.
